Committed to the practice of law

Cynthia Masson

Cynthia Masson has been practicing law for fourteen years, but her legal experience actually began nearly a dozen years before in 1987, when she entered the law profession as a legal assistant. In addition to her duties as a legal assistant, she developed a curriculum and taught a course for aspiring legal assistants at Texas Tech University. At the same time, she worked on a broad variety of cases, both criminal and civil, involving people from all walks of life who were accused of crimes, injured in accidents, or needed help in family law cases. These real-life experiences, coupled with the guidance of knowledgeable lawyers like Charles Snuggs and Philip Wischkaemper, taught her to view matters from her client's perspective and to "think outside the box" in crafting creative solutions to their legal problems. These experiences also cemented her commitment to become a lawyer.

In 1995, Cynthia moved to San Antonio and entered her first year of law school at St. Mary's University. In 1998, Cynthia opened her solo law office in San Antonio's historic Tower Life Building, where she met her mentor, long-time San Antonio attorney John F. Tafolla, Jr. Focusing her practice primarily on criminal and family law, she has assisted hundreds of people in resolving their legal problems since that day.

Through hard work and perseverance, she built a small but thriving solo law practice which she maintained until the creation of Masson & Peranteau in 2012. Along the way, Cynthia has taken the time to learn the nuances of each court in which she practices, and uses her experience to more effectively communicate with judges and other attorneys to meet the needs of her clients. Over time, she has built a reputation as a strong advocate for her clients.

Criminal law experience

In criminal cases, Cynthia Masson has aggressively defended the rights of hundreds of individuals in state and federal courts. Her criminal experience covers a broad range of cases, including possession of marijuana, drugs or controlled substances, driving while intoxicated, forgery, theft, conspiracy, organized crime, assault and sexual assault offenses. Cynthia is licensed to practice in the State of Texas and in federal court. In addition, she has successfully represented clients in appeals before the Fourth Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Texas. In and out of court, Cynthia provides her clients with broad legal expertise and depth of experience.

Children's Ad Litem of the Year

Because she has always had a special interest in helping disadvantaged children, Cynthia has spent many years working within the Children's Court system in Bexar County, representing both children and adults who find themselves entangled in the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services system (formerly known as Child Protective Services or CPS). In 2004, Cynthia was named Ad Litem of the Year by Child Advocates San Antonio (CASA) for her outstanding work in representing abused and neglected children. In addition, she has handled adoptions for many of these children who are not able to return to their parents, doing her part to ensure they grow up in safe and loving homes. To this day, the cases involving these special children are among the most rewarding in her career.

Areas of civil expertise

In addition to her work with disadvantaged children, Cynthia's experience in civil cases includes private adoptions, paternity suits, and CPS investigations of allegations of child abuse or neglect against parents or other adults. She also handles expunctions of criminal records, petitions for non-disclosure, sealing of juvenile records, occupational driver's licenses and other civil proceedings that help individuals minimize the damaging effects of prior criminal problems so they can move forward with their lives.
